A Little Bit of Sanity and A Lot of Chaos: Pantry Makeover

Pantry Makeover

It seems that everyone is cleaning out and cleaning up. Especially the pantry. The pantry seems to be a big one this month.

We're gettin' on the bandwagon, and redoing our pantry. We're doing this for several reasons, actually.

I've been reading the Family Dinners book (see my post about it here) and making sure that we've got a few staples in our pantry so that no one goes hungry, God forbid there isn't pasta in the cupboard.

Here's our current pantry.

Things are fairly organized, but the shelves are not great. They are starting to bow in the middle and we can't put things in the back because we can't reach them. They also aren't very kid friendly.

So, the idea is to get things into jars, so they are visible. I've got a few already. Then I found these at TJ Maxx for seven dollars. That's right, 6 glass jars for fourteen dollars.

I'm hoping this weekend we will be taking the wire shelving down and adding some C shaped shelves made out of MDF in there.

I'm also hoping to convince hubbs to put up a glass door....we'll see about that one!

Here are a two pantries from Country Living that I dream of.

I love the color AND I love all the glass jars and the baskets....

And this one. Wow. I love the white. And the chalkboard. And of course all the jars. Delish.

Hopefully I'll have something to show you next week!

I clean out and reorganize the pantry about every 2 months...it just needs it that frequently to make sure everything is still visible and the food is rotated. I did it yesterday...always takes a few hours.

I also have very deep shelves. I store less frequently used stuff in the very back (#10 cans of dried fruits and veggies, my big bags of dried beans, oats, wheat, etc.) and use diaper boxes as drawers in front, labeled with what they have (snack, cereal, pasta, mixes). The diaper boxes don't look pretty (although I suppose I could cover them in paper if I cared) but they were free and already have handles! I just take the 1 large box with the 10 kinds of cereal to the table...no more running back and forth to the pantry when the kids change their mind about what kind of cereal they want, AGAIN. :)

right....i USED to have a tiny pantry with stuff in jars and what not, but now that we move every 2 or so years, i can't keep haulin' all those fun, vintage jars around, so i keep it simple....baskets are my best friend. i do still have like 6 big vintage jars that i put flour, nuts and pancake mix and coffee it. i use those because i just think they are fun and functional.
hope you get the pantry of your dreams!!! you would scream if you saw mine!!!! lol!!!
i love the yellow pantry you showed. that is super cute. good luck!!!! can't wait to see it when you are finished.
