A Little Bit of Sanity and A Lot of Chaos: Sideboard

Sideboard

I've been wanting to transform a sideboard for quite some time. I love the look of the old ones. And I let two slip through my fingers. One woman stole the ticket for one right from my little hands while at GW...and the other one was at ReStore and I did not have room in the van for it because I had all the kids with me and T was out of town so I could not go back to get it.

This is similar to what I was looking for, and what I let slip away...

But, the other day, I found this little number and couldn't say no to it.

I wasn't crazy about the little applique thing in the middle, but it quickly grew on me. Mainly because when I removed it, there was a huge hole and I had no idea how to fill in the space. So, it went back on.

I started right away on it. Removed the drawers and pulls. And sanded the top. Perfectly. I learned my lesson with my desk.

I covered the top with painters tape and paper so I didn't ruin the freshly sanded area. Then I primed the base. I stained the top ebony and put a coat of poly on it...AND... painted the base....Sunflower yellow, by Rustoleum. Yep. Yellow. I was going to paint it white. But, the boys were napping, I didn't have any white left and I had a bunch of yellow. Plus, it's good to go outside my comfort zone and see what people like.

Can I tell you something? I LOVE IT. LOVE IT. Oh, it is so perfect! I updated the handles. Scuffed them up a bit, distressed all the edges and it is so cute! I hope it goes to a good home!

Dreamy, creamy, buttery yellow. I heart yellow.

I like the yellow, nice change from white. When you said sunflower yellow I was picturing it much brighter. But his is nice!
And what? The lady took the tag from your hand?? I need more of that story!

I love what you did with the sideboard! I have a buffet from GW that I'm going to redo and I'm also planning on staining the top and painting the base white (similar to your original plan with the desk). I have a few questions: did you use an electric sander for the top? If I use a deglosser and sand by hand do you think that's sufficient? And did you sand down the drawers and base before you painted?

Thanks so much - great work!

It looks great! Yellow is such an intimidating color to work with - I'm forever wanting to paint a piece yellow, but haven't gone for it yet. I love how yours turned out!
