A Little Bit of Sanity and A Lot of Chaos: These little rugrats...

These little rugrats...

I had to buy myself one of these. I kept getting shot at and not able to do anything about it. Tom got one too.

Sunday afternoon after the boys went sledding we ran around the house using our "shooty guns" to get each other. The boys thought it was hysterical and Tom and I had a blast.

When I first had kids I tried as hard as I could to keep guns and shooty things out of the house. Finally I gave in to the pressure. I caved. I couldn't take it anymore. The boys with their infinite wisdom turned absolutely everything into a shooty gun. EVERYTHING. Toilet paper roll. Car. Stick. Pen. Their penises (was that too much information?) But it's true. I was losing the battle. So I figured if I can't beat them, join them. And they are having the time of their lives. They are loving that we are playing the game with them. Run around the house and chase after each other with Nerf guns. Fantastic. I even ordered them more suctions. I know. Don't judge me. Just know that I'm playing with my kids...and hopefully not turning them into serial killers....

I actually get really tired with the "if we let our kids have toy guns they will become violent" attitude.

Some of the most gentle, kind, selfless, giving, men I know were raised with guns. Their parents taught them to respect the guns and use them properly. But more than that, they taught them to be kind, loving, responsible individuals. These men (and some women I know as well) hunt, and recreate and get out in nature with those dreaded guns.

The founding fathers would be completely baffled by our overwhelming fear of guns.

The attitude of many today seems to be one of: I can neglect to do the hard work of helping my child become a caring idividual who takes responsibility for his/her own actions, as long as I don't let them have a toy gun to play with.

We don't have any real guns in my home, but we've had a BLAST with the nerf guns you pictured!

(Wow. Sorry for the sermon!! Hadn't noticed I felt that strongly about it until I started commenting!)

I raised three boys and now have four grandsons. Believe me, they are all born with that "gun shooting" sound, played with toy guns chasing each other around everywhere, and so far --- not one is a serial killer.

So I say enjoy playing guns with your boys. They will always remember how much fun it was and what a cool mom you are.

So funny-when I saw the picture in my reader, I knew IMEDIATELY what those were!
We have a houseful!
Our two oldest just got those same guns for their birthday, and we had to go out and get the littlest one a nerf gun, too-
FYI-they also sell packs of extra bullets-Invest in that!!!

My boys have used everything you mentioned as a gun...yes, that too!

My cousin has two little boys. They weren't allowed to say "gun" but they could say "pew-er." They made a "pew-pew" noise when they were pretending to shoot, so that's what they called it. lol.

A few years ago, my mother in law got us all marshmallow shooters made from PVC for Christmas. We had a HUGE marshmallow fight in the house while father in law went out to do chores with the livestock. Then we let the dog eat all the marshmallows. It was so much fun!!!!

I applaud you bringing this subject up, as I too fear what others might think of gun play.

I have two boys and they are truly born with that gun play/weapon instinct. We started with light sabres and swords and have had to limit that at times because they get too rowdy. Then they just find things to turn into swords...like baseball bats!

I tried to keep actual gun toys away too, but then one of the Star Wars guys came with a little one, then an Indiana Jones guy, and so on.

They were already turning the Mega blocks into little hand guns so this Christmas we finally bought our oldest his first Nerf gun and he loves it. My husband loves it too. What a great idea to have a family "fight"!

And kids do love it when we come down to their level and play their games. Simple and true.

You are most definatly NOT a bad mom for playing guns with your boys! Society wants to turn boys into emasculated weenies...when thats not what God intended them to be. They were intended to be warriors that protected their families and homes and that probably called for some violence and action once in a while! Boys are MADE like this...why try and change them? We just want to make sure that they know that there is a time and place and they have to be respectful of others. Your doing great!! Game on!

We have a big laundry basket full of Nerf guns at our house too! There is nothing more funny than watching everyone try to get each other!

I was just catching up on some reading (I've also been happy-crappy - the last to get the crud!) and I scrolled down on your page to see what I've missed. I whizzed by this post because I had read it. My boys are sitting eating their breakfast and they jumped from the table. "Mom, wait, go back! What are those?!" I said, "dart guns" "Whose are they?" I told them.

"Can we go to their house?" :o
