Stair progress

I just read Sarah's tales of removing carpet from the stairs. She had it easy! I got all the carpet off the stairs.

The carpet staples are a pain in the arse. But I used my Tom's handy hammer/crowbar, a gift to Tom from my Dad. He should really start gifting these things to me. I slid the crowbar between the carpet and the step and wiggled and shoved all the way across the step. That seemed to pull out a ton of staples.

Every single time I did my last ditch effort on each step to pull the carpet off, I nearly fell down the stairs and had to quickly grab onto the railing. It freaked me out every time. Yet, I kept going....

Now, I have about a zillion more staples to pull out. I'm going to cut that top step and staple underneath the lip. Then I'm going to go dig through the dumpster in our neighborhood where there is a new house going up and look for some pine boards for the landing...or go buy new ones at HD. Not sure yet.

I found it better to leave the padding on the step while removing the carpet because it was a good barrier for the crowbar. That way I didn't ruin the riser.

I love that our entry does this. The front door is on the left. The kitchen/dining on the right.
The photo is taken from our "Formal dining room turned craft/storage/play room".

When I "suggested" that I should paint the spindles Tom shook his head and said, "I knew it. You are going to end up painting all the trim in this entire house white."

  1. Nice progress...especially with all the sickness! I've kicked around the idea of painting all our trim white too. So sick of the oak. Then I look at the doors, the door frames, the baseboards. ACK! I get scared and crawl back into my oak cave. :(

  2. And this is how it starts my friend! ;) It's going to look wonderful and my husband would just be happy if when "I" wanted to paint something, it didn't involve "him" having to paint something!
