Kitchen Island

This was the dresser I found at a thrift store in our town. I wrote about it here. It was $18.00. If I remember correctly, which I'm sure I don't. I saw Michelle's dresser island at From House to Home and had the idea to put one in our kitchen, I'd wanted an island for awhile, just didn't know what to do for one. I thought it would take awhile to find one, but the very next day I found this. Oh. It was 2 days before Christmas.

We finally made it down to Ikea to get our butcher block top. It's a four hour round trip. We actually had a pretty good trip, with just one tiny meltdown from an exhausted Jack about 45 minutes from home.

Here is what the island looked like after I painted it Black Suede by Behr in Satin. You can still see some of the wood undertone...if you remember I did that on purpose. I love the way that looks for some reason.

We were going to just put the block on top and attach it underneath. But, after looking at it resting on top we decided to remove the top of the dresser. (Plus, if we ever end up moving and we don't need an island, this is a fantastic dresser. So, we are keeping the top of the dresser.) When I say we took off the top, I mean Tom. I was too busy playing Memory with the boys. Plus, he likes to feel useful.

We (He) attached the L-brackets on the inside of the dresser.

And then just screwed it in.

I love it. I love it. I love it.

The top was $39. That's it. So this entire island cost us under sixty dollars.

Thank you Michelle for the idea!

  6. That really looks great! The fact that you put the butcher block on top makes it really look like an island and not a dresser. (I agree--it is a great dresser too). Great idea!!

  13. Wow...you have been busy! Love both your wingback chair redo and the fabulous dresser repurposed! Your kitchen has so much charm now, and like you...I love painting old pieces black. I think it adds both a modern and vintage touch! Thanks for linkin' up to Frugalicious Friday! I always look forward to your projects!

  14. This is a great use for a dresser! What a cool island. Cheaper and so much better than anything you could buy premade. You are my kind of girl with all of these furniture makeovers. You rock!

  18. Hi there! I've been working on something VERY similar to this, and I have almost the exact same piece-except I've been slacking on finishing it! I think you have motivated me to finnish mine . . . Great job!

  20. WONDERFUL! Love this piece! And I'm so with you. I prefer an island to look like a piece of furniture rather than a boxy cupboard. So why not use the real deal?

Thanks for linking up to SNS!

  21. Beautiful job. And I like that you saved it to be a dresser again someday. Yes gotta love Ikea but why are they all a 4 hour round trip? Ours is that way and after my son and hubby broke the first apron sink I had to go back again to get another. Speaking of - it has been awhile since I have seen Ikea - gotta plan another trip.

  22. This is an incredible idea! Its so great because if you have limited floor space in your kitchen you can still have an island. Great inspiration!

  24. Oh my gosh!.. I have just moved into a new apartment where a full sized kitchen table will not fit (since I would not part with my kitchen hutch!), but with all the baking I LOVE to do, I keep pulling out a card table for the extra table space... THIS, however, just might work for me! LOVE this idea, and LOVE how yours looks! I'll be measuring my floor space and thinking more on this TONIGHT! ~tina

  39. Amazing! If I ever have space for an island, this is what I am going to do. I just love it!

  40. No way! I totally have this EXACT same dresser. I've had it since I was a kid and I loved it so much that I took it with me when I grew up and moved. I'm 25yo now and I've been mulling over refinishing it lately as all this DIY stuff sucks me in (I'm a new DIY addict). Its so banged up, it's moved with me about 7x in the past decade, it needs some TLC. Gosh thats crazy. I've been wondering what it would look like if I painted it black. Thank you for saying what color/brand you used, because I'm going to copy you right to the T! Lol! It's gorgeous! Now I cant wait to get started!

  43. Never would have thought of taking a dresser and making it an island. Nice

  44. WOW! This is amazing! I have been thinking my kitchen needs a island, but I didn't want a big one, plus how would I make it match my cabinets? This is perfect! I am pretty sure we have matching kitchen's too. I have white cabinets, black appliances, and our counters look the same as well, so I would be making mine black too. I just wish I had dark knobs like you!

  45. I found you through another blog because I saw your kitchen island and fell in love. I really need some extra storage and counter space in my kitchen, but I'm a little bit broke. I totally think I could do this! Can I ask what you did to the back of the dresser? My kitchen is very open, so if I had something in there, it would have to look "pretty" on both sides!
