Hello cabinet. I love you.

Excuse me, Mr. Kilz. My name is Kirsty and I want to marry you. Has anyone used spray primer Kilz? I am in love. I've used spray primer before. Just the Rustoleum stuff. Not Kilz. Sorry Rusty, I'm a convert.
This is the best primer I've ever used. Smooth, efficient, no spots, dries in a jiffy. Hello, Kilz, are you out there, do you hear me? I love you!

I saw this cabinet at Goodwill. I knew the second I saw it how I was going to paint it. But, I didn't know if I wanted it. It was a beaut, that's for sure. I'm going to put pies in it. No. Secret special stuff that the kids can't have. Like my stash of miniature peanut butter cups....

The door handles are broken so I had to replace them, but fortunately I had leftovers from the kitchen refab.

Primed with Kilz spray paint. Love it.

I painted all of the hinges and the drawer handles ORB. They look exactly like the new handles on the doors. Exactly. Love it. I was tempted to get a new middle drawer handle, and still am, but it's only 2 1/2 inches wide, not the new 3 inches. So, I would need to fill, repaint and drill. And that was just too much for my impatient self today.

Ta Da! (Spray painted with Rustoleum Heirloom White.)

I used my glaze in the corners and the creases, and that's it. I just wanted a tiny bit of discoloration. I also sanded the edges a little bit.

So fab. I'm in love.

And, of course, in all of my excitement and my patience of a two year old, I put all the hardware on too soon and scraped a little paint off. Argghhh. Drat me.

  3. Another fabulous project! I have a question. On the before picture, I couldn't tell on the doors and drawer if that was stencilling or if the design was carved into the wood. I'm assuming it was stencilling. But if it was carved, how did you fill it? Just wondering for a project for me in the future. Thanks for sharing your awesomeness with us!

  5. Andrea - the design was just a stencil. Thank goodness. But, I think if you use woodfiller and sand and fill and sand then prime, you should be good to go.

Sherry - KILZ is just the primer. I don't know if I explained that well enough. I hope I did. I primed with Kilz spray primer and then painted with Rustoleum Heirloom White.

    Hope that makes sense!

  6. Okay- first off---- I heart peanut butter cups. And my son has declared them as his fave. Sigh. That means I have to share. Have I lost weight by sharing? NO. :)
Second- just saw your tweets... I'm also a Vikings fan! And another Mom just planned a birthday party during the game this Sunday. AUGH!

And finally--- LOVE your cabinet. It looks beautiful. What a super great tranformation!

  15. That looks great, Kirsty! Kilz spray primer, huh? I have their primer where you don't have to sand, but it's brush/roll on. I'll have to check out the spray.

  16. Looks fabulous! Thanks for the Kilz tip, my niece was given a buffet/cabinet that needs a makeover in the warmer weather.
Just wondering, but the middle handle seems to have been put back on upside down. Or maybe that was your plan. Either way, the new paint updates it so nicely. Love peanut butter cups too.

  18. This is not a piece I would've looked at and loved, but you really did a great job and it looks fantastic! I really like little cabinets like that. They provide great storage and you can easily find a wall to put them on. Very nice work!

  19. i have a question ... so many of you ladies are repainting old yucky furniture to look like new pretty furniture.

WHO KNEW you all were using spray paint!!!

so, my question ... does everyone sand their pieces beforehand or not.

i am a little gunshy because that last thing i painted didn'tcome out too well. the paintdidn't seem to stick right. and i DID sand AND use primer!!! : (

i have a whole bedroom set to redo in the garage ... that would be a LOT of spraypaint!!

  20. Amy -

For some reason my last response did not post properly....but basically, I have found the best thing is to prime. Even if you don't sand, priming helps the paint stick.

I've found that spray painting takes practice. I still get drips and runny spots.....just practice before!

    Good luck!
